In my continuing display of the results of optimizing a web site for specific search terms, let
me tell you about another one of my Boer Goat web sites.
I designed Danny Stovall's Red Creek Farm web site in January, 2004. His monthly visit count was fairly moderate (only around
200 unique visitors per month), yet he never seemed to have trouble selling his Anatolian Shepherds.
In December, 2005, I told Danny that I wanted to get his site listing better on search engines and drive more visitors
his way, and asked him if he had any other search terms that he wanted to advertise (essentially, any terms that people would
put into a search engine and he would reasonably expect his site to appear.
He wrote:
"I am focusing on Color and
CODI/PCI genetics. Is there any way to ensure my website comes up when someone types in Paint
or colored boer goats and Codi or Codi/Pci boer goats?"
At the time, I did a search to see if his site showed up for any of those phrases. Searches of Google.com, Yahoo.com and
MSN.com, revealed that he had no presence in the search engines for any of the following phrases
(with the exception of one - as annotated):
- Colored Boer Goats
- Codi PCI Boer Goats (83rd entry on Google)
- CODI PCI
- Colored Boers
- Paint Boers
I also searched for other keyphrases that described his site:
His site had limited visibility for a few of those phrases, but not enough to bring real visitors.
So, I went about optimizing his web site in the same manner as described on this site. I focused on the top set of keywords
(the color / paint / PCI), and I also fixed some of the Anatolian Shepherd pages (because that has been a big part of Danny's
success). These techniques included search
engine optimization of the key pages and search
engine submission. I had Danny write a couple hundred descriptive words about CODI/PCI goats, and created a web page around
that text. He sent me some pictures, and I optimized the meta tags, the page title, the page name, the headers, and redirected
some anchor text in his page to maximize the effectiveness of the keyphrases.
I also did some additional analysis of the pages through some software programs that I have and found a few other ways
to boost these keywords.
In two months time, the results were quite dramatic. By the end of February, the figures had risen across the board. Each
of the three search engines showed stark improvement (of course since the site wasn't listed at all, any showing would have been
good, but I did not think the advance would be as good as it was. The table below reflects the search engine results pages entries
for the keyphrases listed as of 28 Feb., 2006 (around 2 months after I started):

...And here are some more current totals
The Alexa ranking for Red Creek Farms at the end of December was
1,435,197, and by the end of February, it was at 295,970.
If you consider that the marketing budget to achieve this was
around $1 per day, I think the results have been pretty good. The visit count on the website has increased
and the Google pagerank has gone from 0 to 2 (out of 10) in this time period (my goal is 3 or 4). Perhaps in a
future campaign, I will massage his site more for the Boer Goat keywords and phrases (the site does not show up well
for the generic "Boer
Goats" or the less generic "Boer Goats for Sale" keyphrases.
